It was founded in 1797 and is the fifteenth of the twenty one missions built in California. Rich with culture and history, the town of San Juan Batista is located in the heart of the noted San Juan Valley between the Gabilan Mountains and Flint Hills.

The Mission San Juan Bautista Workshop was the first in our California Mission Workshop Series. During this workshop we had special access to the restricted areas not open to the public. Martin Vargas introduced us to Ruben Mendoza, an archaeologist, writer, and photographer who has explored the length and breadth of Mexico, Central America, Europe, and the US Southwest documenting both pre-Columbian and Colonial era sites and collections. A founding faculty member of the California State University, Monterey Bay, and Curator/Project Director of the Mission Conservation Program at San Juan Bautista. With Ruben's expert guidance we spent 3 days in and around the San Juan Mission. Participants submitted their images for a juried book project which Kim is designing as I write this blog. Stay tuned for this exciting new book and keep an eye out for next year's Mission Workshop!
Our dear Kat came all the way from Greece to model for us! Larva came from LA and Katherine from the south bay. All of the models were so comfortable and fun to work with. It was amazing! Thanks to everyone that participated in the class!
This year wasn't any different. He brings up large groups and visits as many different photographers and their studios that they can get in their schedule. This trip they brought over 60 students which we can't accommodate very well here at Wildcat Hill. For those of you that have been here know what I mean. So they paired it down to about 17 interested participants, a group of instructors and students. We gave them the tour of the house and Kim showed 3 generations of Weston Photographs to the group.
Kim also showed the group the digital negatives that we make in the workshop "Platinum Printing and beyond: Using Digital Negatives". We met a new group of people and reconnected with old friends too. One really cool thing was we met some new people from our community! The day started off with Kim giving his lecture "Growing up Weston".

We showed it in Kim's studio. We do need a new screen, so if you know anyone who has one let me know.

We moved into the gallery to view 3 generations of Weston Photography and of course Kim was his amusing self telling his stories while showing his family's work. He showed Edward, Brett, Cole and his own photographs.

Our friend Mathias Hesemans came to spend the day with us, it was great. He used to travel with Brett Weston, Kim's uncle and brought some pictures of his travels with Brett. He has over 500 images of Brett. WOW! to see some of them you can visit his site at DramaticLandscapes.com

Dinner was fun. Enjoyed by all. Then we had several guest photographers show their work, Ryuijie, Chuck Davis and Huntington Witherill.

Ryuijie showed some of his new underwater platinum photographs!

Chuck Davis also brought his underwater images to share.

Tracy Morrison raffled off a copy of The Roots of California Photography.

We had a great time. Kim and Gina Weston at Wildcat Hill.

"A Day with Kim Weston" on Saturday March 27, 2010 is a special introduction to the Weston family's contributions to fine art photography. The day starts at Wildcat Hill, (the former home of the late Edward Weston). Edward's old darkroom is here, it still has some of his original equipment and memorabilia in it. Standing in the darkroom you can easily imagine him printing in the early am or with his son Brett, while they were working on the project prints together. The house really hasn't changed that much, we try to keep it simple as Edward would have wanted it.

In the afternoon the group goes on a field trip to Point Lobos and while Kim points out locations that Edward photographed, he also tells childhood stories about his dad, Cole and his uncle Brett. During the day we show lots of photography, 3 generations of Weston Photography! In the evening we gather for a fireside dinner with guest artist speakers, last year we had photographer Huntington Witherill, sculptor Micah Curtis and photographer Cody Edison.

Even if you aren't a photographer, you can still appreciate the history and magic of Wildcat Hill.

During our visits, we listened to her tell stories of her times with Edward. I was very fond of Charis and even though we didn't spend a lot of time together we shared a common bond. For me a deep connection. She lived in our house with Edward Weston, where they made their life together and he photographed her, making some of his most famous photographs. Now I live here with Kim - Edward Weston's grandson. For the first 15 of our 20 years here together, I was his muse and model. Still his muse, I just don't model anymore :).

Whenever I spent time with Charis, I would become very sentimental and teary eyed. I'm not quite sure why that was, but she was an amazing woman with an inquisitive eye, so smart and witty.

Wildcat Hill is quite a magical place. Kim and I became keepers of this property. We have shared the essence of Wildcat Hill with as many people that have shown the interest. We will miss Charis but she will always be with us in spirit. And I can read her book "Through Another Lens" over and over again. Thank you Rachel for being such a wonderful daughter and caretaker of such a wonderful mother. Love to you and your family.

Take Care,
Happy Thanksgiving!

I have been using Front Page for almost 9 years. It has served its purpose well but it's time to move on. Microsoft doesn't use Front Page any longer, it has been changed to Expression Web, so sooner than later my website will run into problems because it uses Front Page Extensions. I took a Dream Weaver class at our local college but after 3 months didn't feel confident to build a complete website. I did learn a lot and rebuilt my website in 2006, but used Front Page. Now its 2009 and things are changing so rapidly. I want to add video and be more interactive. I have researched classes in this area and really can't find anything that works, so up to San Francisco to take a full 3 day - 6 module Dream Weaver class. I am excited yet nervous all at once. I have so many ideas and know this process will take a while but at least I am moving forward, putting one foot in front of the other. Following my intuition.

Tom Burns is a very personable guy, we liked him right away. The mood was upbeat and exciting. It felt like a community coming together where all the arts where represented. The Saturday Night Gallery and Wine Tasting was amazing with everyone going from gallery to gallery, the buzz was on! During the weekend, Kim talked about what it was like for him to grow up being a Weston. I saw a great concert by Griffin House, had brunch with local composer Alan Silvestri and watched several movies! It was a great event and even better to be a part of it.

When we first started our website in 2000, we wanted to offer something that would keep bringing people back to our site. Edward Weston used to have a print of the month club too. Back in the 30's you could purchase a print a month from Edward for something like $5. Could you imagine buying a Pepper 30 or Head down Nude for 5 bucks? People did! I remember Charis saying it was hard back then because the only way to reach people was by the mail, and how different things were now that we have the internet. This program has been very successful for us. The current (2009 POM's) selection of photographs are from the 1980's. Kim rarely went outside of his studio to work. He story-boarded all of his series, often having the model represent himself in his photographs. Kim visited many aspects of his life including life, birth, death and friendship.

Wildcat Hill in the 1930's

Last night we had our first rain (sprinkle) of the season! It was so nice to hear the rain on the old tin roof. This is one of the driest years that we can remember in the past 20 years. Yes, Kim and I are celebrating our 20th year of living on Wildcat Hill. Our anniversary is in December. We both look at each other in amazement wondering where the time has gone and how did it pass so quickly? Now with our son in college, Kim and I can have a “single” married life “without kids” under our feet. We didn’t have much time alone after we were married. Much of our lives have been centered around our son and of course photography.

When I met Kim, I was a massage therapist. While Zach was young, I worked part time on friends and family. I remember I would put Zach down for his nap and go give a massage. That took a lot of energy, but we were creative on how we worked. Kim was a carpenter, really a jack of all trades. He worked for friends and family, but was always his own boss. Back in those early days, he photographed on the weekends, developed his film in the evenings and during the week printed at 3:00am in the morning. He would get up, go print and then be off to work by 8:00am.

Our son Zach at Wildcat Hill (a few years ago)

Whenever I used to complain about something he always used to joke about how he and I could change places. I could make the money and he would watch the kid. And about 10 years ago he came to me and told me he wanted to retire from carpentry. He said we could hire a manager or I could run the business. Well we didn’t have much money to hire a manager, so I set off on the long journey to learn how to operate a computer. My massage days were over.

I come from a family of entrepreneurs. In the early days (1947) of Carmel my grandmother owned a hotel in the heart of Carmel called "The Homestead". I spent many weekends there as a child and in 1969 my family moved in to run the hotel. The hotel had 12 rooms and my first job was being a maid. Not the most fun, but it made me money back then. I remember so well my boyfriend going off and having fun while I had to stay and work! Besides cleaning rooms, I learned how to garden, how to sweep redwood needles off of the walks after big storms, how to book reservations and check people in and most importantly how to interact with people. I learned how to run a business.

So running Weston Photography has been fun and exciting. I would say one of the most important aspects of the business is how you interact with your clients. And just like any home based business you work a lot!

Off to College; Big Sur Nude, other news

Greetings!
We have returned from San Diego with full hearts! We dropped our son off at San Diego State University and he started class on Aug. 31st. People are wondering how we are going to be affected by "the empty nest syndrome" but we seem to doing okay. One reason is that we have been working towards this event for so many years! I have actually completed a major goal of mine. Getting our son to college. I would say last year was a major learning curve for me, but I did it. I listen for the phone to ring looking at the caller id and hope it's him. I will be listening for his truck to drive up the driveway but it's already here! I am so proud of his accomplishments and am looking forward to watching him progress on his journey.

Two weekends ago we held the "Big Sur Nude Workshop" with Michelle Magdalena. The opening night was held at the Henry Miller Library in Big Sur CA. We had a fabulous dinner prepared by Michelle and her family. After the meal we gathered around and watched a slide presentation. We hope to return soon to hang out with Magnus Toren director of the library. He is a charming and warm host. We photographed for 2 consecutive days, one at Wildcat Hill and the other in a private canyon that leads to the ocean. Beautiful location. Photographer Will Giles gave a talk and shared his ideas and photography with the group after a fireside dinner at our house. Michelle invited "The Gallery Girls" from LA to model for us. They were great. Thanks Michelle and thanks to the "Girls". We had a great group of photographers - thanks for joining us!

Kim photographing a nude she behind the ferns - got some great images, coming soon!

Each year we get requests for internship, but since Kim does all of his own printing, mounting and spotting he doesn’t really need an intern for those tasks. So he kept thinking about what we needed to have done. One project was very much in Kim’s thoughts – design a book on his painted photographs. So that is what Cody Edison has been doing for us on his summer vacation.
He was a first place winner in our 2008 Weston Scholarship Portfolio Contest and he went on to The California Institute of the Arts in Valencia to study photography. He searched many art colleges and decided this was the best choice for him.

It’s been fun having Cody here in the afternoons. He has spent many hours going through Kim’s painted photographs and designing the book. He spent time looking at other books and then presenting us with his ideas. I must say it is coming together so beautifully… he’s taken photos of Kim’s images and learned some new Photoshop techniques. He’s learned about fonts, text and what you should do before you start putting your book together. It’s been a fun process. So while all of this is happening and we are hanging out working on the computer together, I am sure he is wishing he was in the darkroom printing. Well he didn’t get to the darkroom yet but Kim did give him a mounting tutorial. Hope you enjoy it and we will keep you all posted on the upcoming book!

Even though I am not a photographer, I have fun photographing. To me it's like a record of our lives. I really enjoy watching Kim photographing too. I don't have to work on my computer, answer emails or any of that business related stuff. Plus you get to see people you have met before and you meet new people! San Miguel Mission workshop was a unique opportunity to photograph in the mission grounds where not many get to go. Al had a wonderful program lined up for his 30+ participants to enjoy. Kim gave presentation one night. It's always nice to hear him speak. Kim came away with some amazing images and will be part of Al's special San Miguel Mission Portfolio. Thanks for letting us come join your group AL!

Greetings, here's a bunch of news about what Kim and I have been doing in the past month. We are on our way to be with Al Weber's group down at the San Miguel Mission. Hope it cools down a bit. Today the fog is thick which means its hot in the valley!

Advanced Landscape Workshop with Kim and Randy Efros

The class started at local painter Reed Farrington's studio just a few miles down scenic Hwy 1.

Reed gave us an exclusive painting demo.

We photographed around his home and grounds.

We photographed along the beautiful coast, the weather was wonderful. Kim and Randy both gave in depth critiques to the students. We visited the Ansel Adams Portrait show at the Center for Photographic Art in Carmel. A show worth seeing. Dinner at Wildcat Hill around the fireside with guest photographers Huntington Witherill and Rachael Short. Kim showed his newest painted ballerina photographs.

What a great group of photographers to be with on our first nude workshop of the year. After an exhausting search for models (Kim swears every time he came into the gallery that I was on the internet looking at naked girls :-) He was right! I finally found several for that weekend. They were all great and the time I invested in finding them paid off. I have seen some wonderful images and can't wait to see more. Guest photographers included Evynn LeValley, Ryuijie, and Huntington Witherill. If you missed this one the next one is in June and we still have a few openings in the Weston Figure Workshop sponsored by Mark Comon of Paul's Photo. Check out the workshop page for more info. www.kimweston.com/workshops/workshop.htm

A Day with Kim Weston - March 28, 2009

Our workshop series began at the end of March with "A day with Kim Weston" It was a fun group, we toured Edward Weston's house and darkroom, and showed a lot of photography including Kim, Edward, Brett and Cole! Kim also shared some of Brett's large format negatives. In the afternoon we toured the north shore of Point Lobos State Park where Edward took many of his famous tree photos.

Later, we had dinner with several guest photographers including, Huntington Witherill, Cody Edison and sculptor Micah Curtis from Big Sur.

Barbara Briggs-Anderson of Loon Hill Studios contacted Kim to see if he would print a photograph from an original Julian P Graham negative for our 41st President Bush. Julian was the official photographer of The Del Monte Properties known today as The Pebble Beach Company. The photograph is Bobby Jones, Roger Lapham and Prescott Bush (Bush's father),1929 at Pebble Beach Golf Course. Of course Kim said "yes" he'd be honored to. The JP Graham Historical Collection is a proud sponsor of the Weston Photography Scholarship Fund donating $1000 to a high school winner. It’s one thing to be with an artist and look at their work in their company. I believe this really enables you to see the work in a different way. The connection between the art and the person opens up an all new and different way to see their work. On the other hand to actually work with artists together on a photo shoot is a dream come true. For me to work with Sylvie and Ed was so exciting and exhilarating. A creative high you didn’t want to end. Working together enlightened my respect for both of these great artist’s work and only increased after spending 2 days photographing together. Taking photographs can be a very personal introspective action. So to be in the midst of two other people photographing – all three lost in their own work and at the same time wrapped up in the other two’s worlds, was unbelieving exciting and rewarding for me as a photographer. Good friendships became great friendships after sharing such excitement and intimacy together.
Like any great experience I can’t wait to do it again!
Thanks to Ed, Sylvie, Deter, Gina and our 2 great models!

Photographing with Sylvie Blum

Last year, we had the privilege to meet Sylvie Blum. When we travel to Los Angeles we always stay with our good friends, Ed and Sandy Martin.
